Artist Statement |
My influences come primarily from the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries in terms of the use of light, color and surface. I have attempted to combine the brush work of Sargent, the hues and tonalities of Holbein and the light effects of Caravaggio, into a style which has a firm foundation in tradition, yet which deals with contemporary subjects. ( I do embrace Baudelaire's heroism of modem life). Strictly speaking, taking the eclecticism of such sources into account, my work would have to be classified as post-modem. This label, however, does not communicate the sense I am trying to convey. Such a sense is an atmosphere of confinement and the modem malaise of a postindustrial landscape described by eloquent paint. |
